Meet your body, this remarquable artist !
The muscle chains organise all the movements of the body and are closely linked to breathing.
It’is generally taught that there is a set of three breathing muscles that participate in the breathing process : abdominal, diaphragmatic and intercostal. However, when the muscle chains are taken into account, we realize that the whole body participates in breathing process , making up the entire apparatus.
This new awareness will give the singer a sensation of fluidity, effortless breathing and posture, and much more security during performance.
Through simple explorations we will clarify each section of the muscle chains, and see how they work with breathing : the flexion and closing chains that accompany the exhaling and the extension and opening chains that accompany the inhaling.
The dynamic balance between these two antagonistic muscle chains is a real key for supporting the voice.
Further, the singer will perceive the respiratory dynamic, the posture, the stability of the larynx, the vocal tonicity and the adaptation/flexibility of the resonance cavities as different aspects of a single movement that responds naturally to an expressive intention, instead of a group of actions that prohibits easiness.
Just as the painter-artist uses a colour palette, the singer uses a sensory palette in order to produce the desired sound. The aim of exploring the muscle chains is to enhance our ability to observe, analyse and deeply feel the unity of the body, expanding by this way our « sensory palette ». Then, the body will progressively inscribe the new « sensory colours » in its memory until they become available to the singer's creativity.
These explorations will be summarized in a short series of Qi Gong exercices, the aim of which is to reactivate a global perception of mouvement, and at the same time to energize breathing, to increase flexibility of the body, and to focuse the mind.
